M. Augier, D. J. Teece. Research, Publishing, and Management Education

V.2, N4, 2004

Nowadays the disciplined research is the distinguishing feature of leading business schools in USA and Europe. Generating new knowledge in management theory is supported by strong academic infrastructure, including peer-reviewed journals, doctoral programs, and international conferences. These facts are taken into account by the best business schools in China and India, established in the last decade, which have already attained notable positions in the world rankings. Undoubtedly, reaching international standards of high-quality research and publishing is critical for the development of competitive national system of professional managers’ training as well as for the establishment of world-class business schools in Russia. This article is based on the paper given by Prof. D. J. Teece, Coeditor-in-chief of the Russian Management Journal, at the presentation of RMJ in St. Petersburg (May 24, 2004). D. J. Teece discussed both the issues of organizing research in business schools and publishing its results in peer-reviewed journals. Prof. Teece’s judgments are based on the impressive personal achievements in research (his articles on innovation management, strategy theory and knowledge management occupy leading positions in the citation indexes) and on the state-of-the-art analysis of management research and publishing procedures in the leading business schools.
